A portable compressor covers a surprising range of household jobs, and it is genuinely wrong for a few of them. The distinction is pressure against volume.
The Fundamental Difference
Tyres want high pressure and very little air. An air bed wants a large volume of air at almost no pressure.
Those are opposite requirements and they need different pumps. A tyre compressor produces high pressure and low flow, which is why it fills an air bed slowly and works hard doing it.
What a Tyre Compressor Handles Well
- Car, van and bicycle tyres, which is what it is for
- Footballs, basketballs and sports balls, with a needle adapter
- Wheelbarrow and mower tyres
- Small inflatables where a nozzle adapter fits
- Topping up anything already mostly inflated
What It Handles Badly
Air beds, paddling pools, large inflatables and anything with a substantial internal volume.
It will get there eventually, and the motor is running at low load for a long period, which is exactly the duty it is least suited to. Most portable compressors state a maximum continuous run time and this is where it gets exceeded.

Sports Balls
These need a needle adapter, which most compressors include, and considerably less pressure than people assume.
A football is typically around eight to sixteen PSI depending on the code, which is well below any car tyre. Over-inflating stresses the seams and changes how the ball plays.
Wetting the needle before inserting it prevents damage to the valve, which is the usual way a ball develops a slow leak.
Never Inflate These
Anything not designed to hold pressure. A compressor produces enough force to burst containers, and improvised inflation of anything sealed is a genuine hazard.
Also, never use a compressor to blow dust off skin or clothing. Compressed air directed at the body can force air under the skin, which is a serious injury.
Watch the Duty Cycle
Small compressors get hot. Where a manufacturer states a run time before resting, that is a specification rather than a suggestion.
Filling a paddling pool continuously is the classic way to burn out a motor, and the smell of hot plastic is a signal to stop rather than push on.
Adapters
Most units ship with a needle, a cone nozzle and a valve adapter, which covers balls and small inflatables.
Keeping them with the compressor rather than in a drawer is the difference between having them and buying another set.
Deflating
Some units have a deflate function, which is genuinely useful for packing away air beds and pool toys and considerably faster than waiting.
